The Kerala High Court has sought clarification from the state government regarding a police directive that seeks to halt the traditional 'Pappanji' burning during New Year's celebrations in Fort Kochi. Justice Easwaran S. has requested the government pleader to specify the legal basis for the police's stop memo issued against this customary event.
'Pappanji' burning is a longstanding ritual in Fort Kochi, where a large effigy of an old man is set ablaze at midnight on December 31st to usher in the New Year. This year, the Mattancherry police issued a notice to prevent the burning of the effigy, citing safety concerns.
Gala de Fort Kochi, the club responsible for erecting the 'Pappanji' this year, filed a petition challenging the police's directive. The club informed the court that they had obtained the necessary permissions from other statutory authorities to both erect and burn the effigy.
The court has scheduled further consideration of the matter for December 27th.
