In a unified and resolute response to the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Bar Associations of Jammu and Srinagar have declared a complete suspension of court activities on April 23, 2025. This bandh serves as a solemn protest against the heinous assault that claimed numerous innocent lives and left many injured in the Baisaran Valley of Anantnag district.
The Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA), Srinagar, expressed profound grief and condemnation over the attack, labeling it a "cowardly and barbaric assault" on civilians and tourists. Advocate Waseem Gul, President of JKHCBA Srinagar, articulated the collective sorrow of the legal fraternity, emphasizing the brutality of the act and its stark opposition to the values of a civilized society. The association's decision to halt all legal proceedings in the High Court and subordinate courts underscores their commitment to denouncing violence and standing in solidarity with the victims.
Simultaneously, the Jammu & Kashmir High Court Bar Association, Jammu, led by President K. Nirmal Kotwal, echoed similar sentiments. The association announced a complete shutdown of court proceedings, extending their deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. This unified stance by both Bar Associations highlights the collective outrage and mourning within the legal community.
The bandh received widespread support from various sectors of society. The Chamber of Commerce & Industry, transport unions, and traders' associations in Jammu endorsed the protest, leading to a total shutdown across the region. Public transport services were suspended, and a complete chakka jam (road blockade) was observed as a symbolic gesture of defiance against terrorism and in support of the victims' families.
The Pahalgam attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, involved militants affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF) opening fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadow. The assault resulted in the deaths of at least 28 individuals, including Indian and foreign tourists, and injured more than 20 others. Survivors recounted harrowing experiences, with attackers allegedly targeting non-Muslims and sparing women to relay the horrors of the incident. The brutality and targeted nature of the attack have intensified the collective grief and resolve within the region.
