On May 21, 2025, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar bid farewell to the Karnataka High Court, marking the end of a significant chapter in his judicial career. His departure comes as he prepares to assume the esteemed position of Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, following his appointment by the Central government on May 20, 2025. The farewell ceremony was a moment of reflection and reaffirmation of the values that have guided his tenure on the bench.

In his farewell address, Justice Somashekar emphasized the profound role of the Constitution in India's democratic framework. He articulated that the Constitution transcends being merely a legal document; it serves as a social contract and a moral compass that ensures justice is not just a theoretical concept but a tangible reality for all citizens. He stated, "I reaffirm my allegiance to the Constitution, rule of law. I seek blessings of almighty, goodwill of all, so I may uphold dignity of my office, maintain sanctity, contribute meaningfully to the justice delivery system in our pluralistic democracy. Let us remind ourselves that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but a social contract and a moral compass. The guiding philosophy is to ensure that justice is not a promise on paper but a reality."

Justice Somashekar's legal journey began with his appointment as a District and Sessions Judge on June 17, 1998. He was elevated to the position of an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 14, 2016, and subsequently became a permanent judge on November 3, 2018. Throughout his tenure, he has been recognized for his commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution and for his contributions to the justice delivery system.

As he transitions to his new role in the Manipur High Court, Justice Somashekar remains steadfast in his dedication to the Constitution and the rule of law. He expressed his awareness of the responsibilities that come with his new position, stating, "As I undertake this constitutional duty, I am mindful of the high expectation placed upon the judiciary to protect the fundamental values of liberty, equality and fraternity. As I prepare to discharge my Constitutional role in High Court of Manipur, I do so with fidelity to principles of judicial independence, directive of equality before law, protection of life and liberty and the vision of justice, social, economic, political.

Justice Somashekar's farewell speech serves as a poignant reminder of the judiciary's role in safeguarding democratic values and ensuring that justice is accessible to all. His reflections underscore the importance of viewing the Constitution not just as a set of legal provisions but as a guiding document that shapes the moral and social fabric of the nation. As he embarks on his new journey in the Manipur High Court, his commitment to these ideals continues to inspire confidence in the judiciary's role as a pillar of democracy.
