Kerala Court Sentences Husband and Mother-in-Law to Life Imprisonment for Starving Woman to Death Over Dowry

Thushara, a native of Karunagappally near Kollam, was married to Chandulal in 2013. At the time of their marriage, her family had provided some gold ornaments and money, with a promise to pay an additional ₹2 lakh later. Over the years, Thushara was subjected to relentless physical and mental torture by her husband and mother-in-law, Geetha Lal, primarily due to unmet dowry demands. The abuse escalated to the point where she was denied proper food, surviving only on soaked rice and sugar syrup for days. This inhumane treatment led to her hospitalization, where she succumbed to her condition on March 21, weighing a mere 20 kilograms at the time of her death .

The case came to light following Thushara's death, prompting a police investigation that revealed the extent of the abuse she had endured. Her mother, Vijayalakshmi, disclosed that Thushara had been tortured for five years and was not allowed to meet her family for over a year. The police arrested Chandulal and Geetha Lal, who were subsequently remanded in custody .

During the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including testimonies from neighbors and medical reports, which corroborated the claims of prolonged abuse and starvation.
