The Madhya Pradesh High Court is exploring innovative ways to enhance the criminal justice system through technology. The court is considering the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze crime scene videography and interpret sign language for persons with disabilities (PWDs). This would assist law enforcement in investigating cases more effectively and ensuring that PWDs can communicate their complaints clearly when filing an FIR.

The court pondered whether AI applications could help law enforcement analyze videography data from crime scenes, which is now a mandatory part of investigations under the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Integration of ICJS and SANDES App

The court's technological initiatives are part of a broader effort to integrate the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) with the SANDES App, an Indian state-owned messaging platform. The integration aims to synchronize data across various verticals such as police, jail, forensic, and prosecution, facilitating seamless communication and data transfer. The court emphasized that this synchronization would ensure better connectivity between complainants or victims and law enforcement, ultimately enhancing the efficiency of the criminal justice system.

NIC's Role and Future Steps

The National Informatics Centre (NIC) has played a significant role in demonstrating how the integration of ICJS with the SANDES App can be achieved. During the court hearing, the NIC team outlined six steps for synchronization and discussed features such as uni-directional communication to keep victims informed of case developments. The NIC has been given eight weeks to complete this project, and the court has directed the Deputy Solicitor General to coordinate with various ministries to explore the possibility of implementing these technologies at a national level.
