PIL on Inequality in Medical Services
The PIL, filed by a concerned individual, shed light on the evident differences in the quality of healthcare services offered at AIIMS Kalyani as compared to AIIMS Delhi and Rishikesh. The petitioner underscored that AIIMS Kalyani, despite being an important medical institution, has not been functioning at its full potential due to inadequate infrastructure and insufficient medical facilities. As a result, the hospital has been unable to cater to the healthcare needs of a large population in West Bengal and neighboring regions.
The petitioner emphasized that AIIMS Kalyani was established with the objective of providing high-quality medical care similar to that of AIIMS Delhi and Rishikesh. However, due to neglect in infrastructure development and resources allocation, AIIMS Kalyani has fallen short of this goal. The lack of sufficient staff, specialized departments, and essential medical equipment was identified as a significant hurdle in achieving the intended standard of healthcare at the institution.
Court's Observations and Directives
In its observation, the Calcutta High Court recognized the importance of AIIMS Kalyani as a medical hub for West Bengal and nearby states. The bench expressed concern that the people of these regions were being deprived of critical healthcare services due to the underperformance of the institution. The court also pointed out that AIIMS Delhi and Rishikesh have set exemplary standards in healthcare, and it is imperative for AIIMS Kalyani to follow the same path.
The court issued a directive to the Central Government to take immediate steps to improve the infrastructure and facilities at AIIMS Kalyani. This includes the recruitment of more doctors, specialists, and support staff, as well as the provision of state-of-the-art medical equipment. The bench stressed the urgency of the matter, noting that the Centre should prioritize the development of AIIMS Kalyani in line with the standards of AIIMS Delhi and Rishikesh.
Impact on Healthcare in West Bengal
This decision is expected to have a significant impact on the healthcare landscape in West Bengal. Bringing AIIMS Kalyani to the same level as its counterparts in Delhi and Rishikesh will ensure better access to advanced medical care for the people of the state. It will also reduce the burden on other healthcare institutions in the region, as more patients will be able to seek treatment at AIIMS Kalyani.
The High Court’s directive aims to address the long-standing issue of unequal healthcare infrastructure across AIIMS institutions in the country. If the Centre acts swiftly on the court’s orders, AIIMS Kalyani could soon emerge as a premier medical institution in the region, providing high-quality healthcare to thousands of patients.
