Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer Assumes Office as Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court

Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer has been appointed as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court, with her appointment officially notified by the Union Law Ministry on February 12. This appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on January 4, 2024.

Born in 1966, Justice Longkumer completed her matriculation in 1983 from Little Flower School in Kohima. She pursued her undergraduate studies at Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, earning a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 1988. Subsequently, she obtained her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, in 1992. She enrolled as an advocate under the Bar Council of North East on November 3, 1992, under the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court.

Justice Longkumer began her judicial career as a District and Sessions Judge in Kohima on April 10, 2013. Throughout her tenure, she has held several significant positions, including Special Judge for the Lokayukta, Sessions Judge in Dimapur (on two occasions), Registrar at the Kohima Bench, and Secretary of the Judicial Law Department for the Government of Nagaland.

Notably, Justice Longkumer is the first woman from the Naga community to be appointed as a judge of the High Court, marking a significant milestone in the representation of women in the judiciary.

Her appointment is expected to bring valuable insights and perspectives to the Gauhati High Court, enhancing its commitment to justice and equity.
