In response, the Supreme Court Collegium convened an urgent meeting and unanimously decided to transfer Justice Varma back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. Justice Varma had been serving at the Delhi High Court since October 2021, following his tenure at the Allahabad High Court.
The legal community has expressed shock and concern over these developments. Senior Advocate Arun Bhardwaj addressed the issue before Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya, stating that many were "shaken and demoralized" by the incident. Chief Justice Upadhyaya acknowledged these sentiments, indicating a shared concern within the judiciary.
Justice Varma did not preside over court proceedings following the incident, with reports indicating he had taken leave. The Supreme Court Collegium's decision to transfer him underscores the gravity with which the judiciary views such matters, aiming to maintain public trust and uphold the integrity of judicial institutions.
