Justice Harish Tandon has officially assumed the role of the 35th Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court. The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, the Governor of Odisha, within the High Court premises. This significant event was attended by esteemed judges and members of the legal fraternity.
The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier recommended Justice Tandon for this esteemed position on March 6, 2025. At that time, he was serving as the senior-most puisne judge at the Calcutta High Court. Recognizing his extensive experience and integrity, the Collegium highlighted his suitability for the role. Subsequently, the central government formalized his appointment on March 21, 2025.
Born on November 16, 1964, Justice Tandon completed his undergraduate studies at Calcutta University in 1983, followed by an LL.B. degree in 1989. He commenced his legal practice on September 26, 1989, focusing primarily on civil and constitutional matters at the Calcutta High Court. His legal acumen led to his elevation as a permanent judge of the same court on April 13, 2010.
The position of Chief Justice at the Orissa High Court had been vacant since the retirement of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh on January 19, 2025. During the interim period, Justice Arindam Sinha served as the Acting Chief Justice. With Justice Tandon's appointment, the Orissa High Court's bench strength increased to 19 judges out of a sanctioned 33 positions. However, this number is expected to decrease to 18 following the proposed transfer of Justice Sinha to the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Tandon's tenure as Chief Justice is anticipated to last until his retirement on November 15, 2026. His appointment is seen as a significant development for the Orissa High Court, given his vast experience and dedication to upholding judicial integrity.
