The Delhi High Court is currently addressing a plea concerning the conduct of the Shahdara Bar Association elections, scheduled for May 9, 2025, at the Karkardooma Courts. The petition, filed by Justice Talwant Singh (Retd.), Chairperson of the Shahdara Bar Association Election Committee, seeks the implementation of both online and offline voting methods due to security concerns arising from a tense atmosphere among contesting candidates.
The matter was heard on May 3 by a full bench comprising Justice Prathiba M. Singh, Justice Navin Chawla, and Justice C. Hari Shankar. The court issued notices to all candidates to be present for submissions and also directed the Election Commission of India to provide Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the election. Furthermore, the court sought a report from the Delhi Police regarding security arrangements, mandating the presence of the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in court on May 5, 2025, to ensure adequate security from May 8 until the declaration of results.
This development follows the postponement of the Shahdara Bar Association elections, initially slated for March 21, 2025, alongside other bar association elections in Delhi. The earlier postponement was due to disruptions and allegations of malpractice, including booth capturing and fraudulent voting, leading to the cancellation of elections in both the Shahdara and Saket courts.
The plea underscores the challenges in conducting fair and peaceful elections within the legal fraternity, especially in the face of internal discord and security lapses. The court's intervention aims to ensure that the electoral process upholds the principles of transparency and integrity, reflecting the broader efforts to reform bar association elections across Delhi.
