On September 22, 2025, the Gujarat High Court adjourned the regular bail plea of Asaram Bapu, a self-styled godman convicted in a 2013 rape case, to September 26. Asaram, currently serving a life sentence, had been granted interim bail on medical grounds, which was extended until July 7. His counsel informed the court of plans to file a regular bail application before the Rajasthan High Court as well. The division bench, comprising Justices Ilesh J. Vora and P.M. Raval, noted that Asaram had been hospitalized following the rejection of his temporary bail plea by the Rajasthan High Court last month. The court also acknowledged that Asaram's counsel had previously argued about his health circumstances and had requested that the temporary bail extension plea be considered on September 22 when the regular bail plea was listed.
Asaram Bapu was convicted by a sessions court in Gandhinagar for raping a woman disciple from Surat between 2001 and 2006 at his ashram in Motera, near Ahmedabad. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offenses), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 357 (assault), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
The Gujarat High Court's decision to adjourn the matter indicates the complexity of the case and the need for thorough consideration of the legal and medical aspects before making a final decision on Asaram Bapu's regular bail application.
