Renowned playback singer Kumar Sanu has approached the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection of his personality rights to prevent the unauthorized use or imitation of his name, image, and distinctive voice. The plea comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of celebrity identities through artificial intelligence (AI) and digital manipulation.
Kumar Sanu, one of India’s most celebrated singers from the 1990s, stated that the increasing use of AI to clone voices poses a serious threat to the originality and integrity of artists. He expressed apprehension that his voice could be replicated or misused without his consent, which would amount to an infringement of his personality and publicity rights. He emphasized that while remakes or recreations of old songs are acceptable when done lawfully, using his AI-generated voice without authorization is unethical and violates his artistic identity.
The singer’s plea follows a growing trend of celebrities seeking judicial safeguards for their personality rights. Similar petitions have recently been filed by noted film personalities such as Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff, who have all moved courts to restrain unauthorized commercial use of their likeness, name, or voice. Kumar Sanu argued that as an artist with a distinct identity and legacy, his persona forms a part of his intellectual property, which deserves the same protection as other creative works.
The plea urges the court to direct relevant authorities to regulate unauthorized digital reproductions and restrain individuals or entities from using AI-generated versions of his voice, image, or likeness for commercial purposes. By seeking this order, Kumar Sanu aims to ensure that his artistic contributions are preserved with dignity and that technological advancements do not erode the rights of artists in the entertainment industry.
