Madras High Court Grants Interim Injunction in ‘Bro Code’ Film Title Dispute

The Madras High Court has granted an interim injunction in favor of actor Ravi Mohan’s production company in a dispute over the use of the title “Bro Code.” The court restrained beverage manufacturer Indobevs Pvt Ltd from making threats of trademark infringement against the production company concerning the film. Justice V. Lakshminarayan noted that the production company had made a prima facie case for relief, warranting temporary protection from interference. The interim injunction is set to remain in force for three weeks, subject to the service of notice to the defendant.

Ravi Mohan’s production company had initiated legal proceedings asserting that the use of the title “Bro Code” for their upcoming film did not infringe upon any trademark rights held by Indobevs, which markets an energy drink under the same name. The company sought to prevent Indobevs from issuing baseless infringement threats that could disrupt the film’s production, marketing, and publicity efforts. The legal action aimed to ensure that the creative and commercial activities surrounding the film were not impeded by unfounded claims from the beverage company.

The court’s order highlights the judiciary’s role in balancing trademark rights with freedom to use titles in creative works. By granting the interim injunction, the High Court provided immediate relief to the production company, allowing them to proceed with the film’s release plans without interference. The decision underscores the principle that claims of trademark infringement must be substantiated before they can impede artistic or commercial endeavors.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on October 10, 2025, when the court will consider the parties’ arguments in greater detail. In the meantime, the interim injunction ensures that Indobevs cannot threaten or obstruct the use of the title “Bro Code,” protecting the production company’s rights and allowing the film project to continue its course without disruption.
