Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi Designated as Senior Advocate

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has designated Punjab Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi as a Senior Advocate, conferring upon him one of the highest honours in the legal profession. The designation was made following the recommendation of the Full Court, which considered his professional competence, standing at the Bar, and overall contribution to the legal field. This elevation places him among a select group of lawyers recognised for their expertise, ability, and service to the legal system.

The High Court’s decision marks a significant acknowledgment of Bedi’s career, especially considering his current role as the Advocate General of Punjab, a constitutional position responsible for representing the State before the High Court and the Supreme Court. His designation as Senior Advocate enhances the prestige associated with the office and reflects the judiciary’s appreciation of his capabilities. Senior Advocate status is granted only after a rigorous evaluation, with emphasis on legal acumen, professional ethics, and contributions to the development of law.

Bedi’s professional journey has involved extensive practice in constitutional, civil, and criminal matters. His appointment as Advocate General earlier had placed him at the helm of Punjab’s legal machinery, and he has since appeared in several matters of public importance. The Senior Advocate designation further strengthens his professional profile and aligns with the longstanding tradition of recognising legal luminaries who occupy high constitutional positions.

The High Court’s move comes within the broader process of periodically designating Senior Advocates in accordance with established guidelines, which require scrutiny of past work, integrity, and standing among peers. The conferral of this status on the sitting Advocate General also reflects the Court’s confidence in his continued ability to assist the judicial system at the highest levels.

The designation is expected to enhance the effectiveness of his role, as Senior Advocates are accorded special responsibilities and privileges within the court system, including the duty to uphold the highest professional standards. It also underscores the respectful working relationship between the judiciary and the State’s top law officer, recognising his assistance to the court in matters of governance, policy, and law.

Through this elevation, the High Court has formally acknowledged Maninderjit Singh Bedi’s contributions to the legal profession and the State of Punjab, marking a significant milestone in his career.
