On the occasion of Constitution Day, Justice Sanjeev Kumar of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court emphasized that secularism must be understood strictly through the constitutional framework — via the fundamental rights and directive principles — and not through individual or locally shaped interpretations. He urged that secularism should not be distorted by personal or regional biases, but should align with the Constitution’s spirit. He stressed the importance of brotherhood and harmony among people of different faiths, appealing to citizens to “live together,” respect each other’s religion, and collectively bring true secularism to the country.
Recalling that on November 26, 1949, the people of India adopted what he called “a beautiful document known as the Constitution of India,” Justice Kumar noted that the Preamble of the Constitution encapsulates the core values the framers intended for the nation. He suggested that reading the Preamble on Constitution Day serves as a means for citizens to reconnect with those founding values. According to him, the act of reading the Preamble today is meant to remind citizens of the constitutional ideals — justice, liberty, equality, fraternity — and reaffirm a collective resolve to uphold them.
Justice Kumar also remarked that the day offers an opportunity for collective reflection, urging people to recall the values enshrined in the Preamble and resolve afresh to follow the path laid down by the Constitution’s framers. He concluded with an appeal for harmony and unity among all citizens, regardless of their religious backgrounds, underlining that mutual respect and coexistence are the true embodiment of secularism as intended by the constitutional design.
