CPM youth leader Dipsita Dhar has approached the Calcutta High Court alleging that doctored and manipulated videos of her speeches are being circulated on social media with the intention of damaging her reputation and spreading misinformation. According to her petition, portions of her speeches and public statements have been selectively edited and shared online in a manner that distorts their original meaning and context.
Dhar has contended that the videos being circulated do not accurately reflect what she said during her speeches. The petition alleges that certain clips were altered and presented in a misleading manner so as to create a false impression among viewers. According to her, the edited videos have been widely disseminated across various social media platforms and have resulted in reputational harm.
The matter was mentioned before the Calcutta High Court through her counsel, who sought urgent judicial intervention. During the mentioning, it was submitted that the circulation of the allegedly doctored videos had serious consequences and was capable of creating misunderstanding among the public. Counsel argued that the manipulated content was being used to malign the petitioner and misrepresent her views.
The petitioner further alleged that the edited videos had triggered widespread trolling and criticism on social media. According to the plea, members of the public were reacting to statements that she never actually made in the manner portrayed in the circulated clips. It was argued that the selective editing of speeches had substantially altered their meaning and had generated a misleading narrative regarding her positions and views.
The petition claims that the circulation of the videos is part of a deliberate effort to tarnish her public image. Dhar alleged that the content was created and shared with the objective of spreading misinformation and damaging her reputation as a public figure. According to the plea, the videos do not present complete speeches or statements but instead contain selectively edited portions designed to convey a false message.
During the proceedings, counsel for the petitioner requested that the Court treat the matter as urgent and grant an immediate hearing. It was submitted that the continued circulation of the videos could lead to further harm and that prompt judicial intervention was necessary to address the situation. The petitioner expressed concern regarding the impact of the allegedly manipulated content on public perception and the potential consequences of its continued dissemination.
However, the Court declined to grant an urgent hearing in the matter. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya refused the request for urgent leave and directed that the petition be filed and processed in the ordinary course. The Court indicated that the matter should proceed according to the regular procedure applicable to such petitions.
As a result, the Court did not examine the merits of the allegations at the stage of mentioning. The issue before the Court at that point was limited to the request for urgent listing. Since urgent leave was declined, the petition will now proceed through the normal process of filing and listing before the appropriate bench.
In her petition, Dhar has sought various forms of relief from the Court. One of the principal prayers is for the identification of the individuals responsible for creating and circulating the allegedly doctored videos. She has requested judicial directions aimed at determining the source of the manipulated content and identifying those involved in its dissemination.
The petition also seeks the removal of the disputed videos and related material from social media and digital platforms. According to the plea, the continued availability of the content contributes to the spread of misinformation and causes ongoing reputational damage. Dhar has therefore sought directions for the removal of the allegedly manipulated videos from online platforms.
In addition, the petition requests preservation of electronic records connected with the creation and circulation of the videos. The plea seeks directions to ensure that relevant digital evidence is preserved so that the origin and dissemination of the content can be properly investigated. Dhar has also sought an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the creation and spread of the disputed material.
The petitioner further seeks measures to prevent any further circulation of the videos while the matter is under consideration. According to the petition, the content has been manipulated in a manner that fundamentally changes the meaning of her speeches and presents an inaccurate picture of her statements. She contends that intervention is necessary to prevent further dissemination of the allegedly altered material.
The High Court has not yet expressed any opinion on whether the videos are in fact doctored or whether the allegations made in the petition are ultimately justified. Those issues remain to be examined during subsequent proceedings. At present, the Court has only declined the request for urgent listing and directed that the matter proceed through the regular course.
Consequently, the petition filed by Dipsita Dhar will now be taken up in accordance with the ordinary procedures of the Calcutta High Court. The questions regarding the alleged manipulation of her speeches, the identification of those responsible for the videos, the removal of the content, and the preservation of digital evidence remain pending for consideration in future proceedings before the Court.
