J&K And Ladakh High Court To Hold Full Court Reference For Chief Justice Arun Palli Following Elevation To Supreme Court

The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh announced that it would hold a Full Court Reference in honour of Chief Justice Arun Palli following his elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The ceremonial proceedings were scheduled as a farewell event to mark his departure from the High Court before he assumed office in the country’s highest court.

The development followed the notification issued by the Central Government appointing Chief Justice Arun Palli as a Judge of the Supreme Court. His elevation came after the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, which had proposed his name for appointment to the apex court along with several other candidates.

According to the notification issued by the High Court, the Full Court Reference was scheduled to take place in the Chief Justice’s Court Room at the Srinagar Wing of the High Court. The ceremony was intended to formally acknowledge his tenure and contributions to the judiciary during his service as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The proceedings were planned to begin with an address by the Advocate General. This was to be followed by a speech from the President of the Kashmir Advocates Association, Srinagar, representing members of the Bar of the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Thereafter, Justice Sanjeev Kumar was scheduled to deliver a farewell address, followed by remarks from Chief Justice Arun Palli himself.

Chief Justice Arun Palli was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in April 2025. During his tenure, he presided over a wide range of constitutional, civil, criminal and administrative matters and headed the judiciary of the two Union Territories.

Before assuming office as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Justice Palli served as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was elevated to the Bench of that High Court in December 2013 after an extensive legal career. Prior to his elevation, he practised law in several fields and was later designated as a Senior Advocate.

Born on September 18, 1964, Justice Palli comes from a family with a strong legal background. His father, Prem Kishan Palli, was a Senior Advocate who later served as a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Justice Palli completed his commerce and law education at Panjab University and began his legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. During his years at the Bar, he handled matters relating to civil, criminal, constitutional, labour and service laws.

He also served as Additional Advocate General for Punjab from 2004 to 2007. In recognition of his standing in the legal profession, he was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2007. His judicial career subsequently advanced through his appointment as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and later as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The Full Court Reference was intended to formally recognize his service and contributions to the judiciary before he commenced his duties as a Judge of the Supreme Court. The event marked the conclusion of his tenure as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and the beginning of a new phase in his judicial career at the apex court.
