Justice U.L. Bhat, former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh and Gauhati High Courts, passed away at 7:30 PM today in New Delhi. Selected as Munsif in 1961 by the Kerala Public Service Commission, he faced political opposition but later became District and Sessions Judge in 1970. He served as a judge of the Kerala High Court from 1980, becoming its Acting Chief Justice in 1991, then Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, and finally Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court until his retirement in October 1995.
Post-retirement, he chaired the Customs, Excise, and Gold Control Appellate Tribunal. Justice V. Ramkumar praised him as a brilliant and courageous jurist, calling his death a significant loss for the country.
