The Supreme Court of India has directed the state of Himachal Pradesh to release water to Delhi to address the water shortage in the national capital. The court also directed Haryana to cooperate by allowing the water to flow through its canals. Delhi had argued that it faces an acute water shortage due to the heatwave, while Haryana argued that it also faces a shortage of water. The court noted that there is no evidence of an acute drinking water crisis in Haryana.
The court ordered Himachal Pradesh to release 137 cusecs of water. The water will be released from Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana and flow to Delhi through Wazirabad.
The court also suggested measures to conserve water in Delhi, such as separating commercial and domestic water supplies.
