Mumbai Police Closes Forgery Case Against Actor Shweta Tiwari
In a recent development, the Mumbai Police have closed the forgery case against television actor Shweta Tiwari, which was initiated by her estranged husband, Abhinav Kohli, in 2021. The case revolved around allegations that Tiwari had forged Kohli's signature on a no-objection certificate (NOC) to obtain a visa for their minor son.

Background of the Case

The dispute traces back to 2017 when Shweta Tiwari sought to travel to the United Kingdom with her son for medical consultations regarding his physiotherapy. Traveling without the child's father necessitated an NOC from Abhinav Kohli. Kohli alleged that Tiwari forged his signature on this document to secure the visa. Upon discovering the purported forgery, Kohli claimed to have informed the UK Embassy, leading to the cancellation of the visa. In March 2021, amid escalating disputes, Kohli filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Tiwari at the Bandra-Kurla-Complex (BKC) Police Station in Mumbai, accusing her of forgery.

Police Investigation and 'A-Summary Report'

Following a thorough investigation, the Mumbai Police submitted an 'A-Summary Report' to the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra on December 17, 2024. An 'A-Summary Report' indicates that the case is closed due to insufficient evidence or the complainant being untraceable. This report effectively closed the case against Tiwari, as the police did not find substantial evidence to support the forgery allegations.

Bombay High Court Proceedings

On December 18, 2024, during a hearing at the Bombay High Court, Additional Public Prosecutor Manisha Mhatre presented the 'A-Summary Report.' Senior counsel S. Purohit, representing Tiwari, subsequently sought permission to withdraw the writ petition filed to quash the FIR, considering the police had already closed the case. The division bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and Dr. Neela Gokhale granted this request, allowing the withdrawal of the petition.

Abhinav Kohli's Response

Abhinav Kohli, appearing as a party-in-person during the High Court proceedings, informed the judges of his intention to file a Protest Petition challenging the 'A-Summary Report' submitted by the police. A Protest Petition allows a complainant to contest the police's closure report, seeking further investigation or reconsideration of the case. The High Court acknowledged Kohli's intent and clarified that both parties are at liberty to pursue appropriate legal proceedings in accordance with the law if any adverse order is passed in the future.

Conclusion

The closure of the forgery case against Shweta Tiwari marks a significant development in the legal disputes between her and Abhinav Kohli. While the Mumbai Police have concluded their investigation citing insufficient evidence, Kohli's proposed Protest Petition indicates that legal proceedings may continue as he seeks to challenge the closure report. The Bombay High Court's decision to allow the withdrawal of Tiwari's petition, coupled with the provision for both parties to initiate further legal actions if necessary, leaves room for potential future legal confrontations between the estranged couple.
