Advocate Tejas Karia Sworn In as Judge of Delhi High Court

Advocate Tejas Dhirenbhai Karia was sworn in as a judge of the Delhi High Court, with Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya administering the oath of office. The Central Government had notified his appointment on February 13, following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation in August of the previous year.

The Supreme Court Collegium highlighted Karia's specialization in arbitration law, noting that the increasing volume of arbitration cases in the Delhi High Court necessitates specialized handling. They emphasized that Karia's expertise would be a valuable addition to the bench.

In its assessment, the Collegium observed that Karia has argued substantive issues before various High Courts and the Supreme Court. His average net professional income of ₹709.69 lakhs over the past five years was cited as evidence of his substantial legal practice. Based on these factors, the Collegium deemed him eminently fit and suitable for appointment as a judge of the Delhi High Court.

Prior to his elevation, Karia was a partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co., leading the firm's Arbitration Practice. His legal expertise encompasses international and domestic commercial arbitration, corporate and securities litigation, general corporate advisory, and various aspects of information technology law, including data privacy and confidentiality. He has represented clients in arbitrations before prominent institutions such as the LCIA, ICC, ICADR, ICA, and SIAC, and has appeared before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts.

Karia's appointment is anticipated to strengthen the Delhi High Court's capacity to handle complex arbitration matters, reflecting the judiciary's recognition of the need for specialized expertise in this area.
