Two men have been remanded to fifteen days’ judicial custody after being charged with sending death and rape threats to actress Ramya online. The criminal complaint was filed by Ramya alleging that the accused had directed threatening and harassing messages toward her via social media, causing her substantial fear for her safety. The threats included graphic references to causing harm and assault, and were sent through private messaging accounts, prompting immediate legal action.
Following investigation, the police produced the two accused before the court, demonstrating prima facie evidence of threatening communications directed at the complainant. The court considered the severity of the allegations— namely criminal intimidation, stalking, and sexual threats—and determined that judicial custody was necessary. It ruled that the two-week period would facilitate the ongoing police investigation, allowing authorities to gather further digital evidence and examine related material.
The court rejected requests for bail or placement in a regular facility, citing the nature of the threats against a public figure and the potential risk of intimidation or destruction of evidence if the accused remained unconfined. It also noted that online harassment of public personalities presents a significant harm to individual liberty and safety, especially when it crosses into violent and misogynist language.
Throughout the hearing, both public prosecutor and counsel for the complainant emphasized the need for custodial remand to ensure an effective, unhindered inquiry. The judge agreed, stating that the circumstances and the content of the communications justified taking a stringent protective response.
The two men are due to remain in judicial custody for the full fifteen-day remand. During this time, investigating officers are authorized to perform searches, collect digital devices, and conduct technical forensic analysis of electronic messages and social media exchanges. They are also permitted to seek further extensions of custody if necessary for investigative purposes.
The case is now under active investigation, and a final decision on further charges or possible bail applications will depend on emerging evidence gathered over the remand period.
